overview
Designing clarity for complexity
Rural Senses was founded at the University of Cambridge in 2019 with a bold mission: make social and environmental impact measurable for the organizations doing the most important work in the world - NGOs, humanitarian foundations, and impact-driven companies operating in remote and underserved communities.
The challenge wasn't just technical. The platform needed to translate deeply qualitative human experiences - gathered through voice recordings in dozens of native languages β into visual, actionable dashboards that stakeholders across cultures and technical backgrounds could genuinely understand and trust.
The Problems
Impact data was scattered, inaccessible, and mistrusted. Organizations were collecting valuable community insights but lacked the tools to analyze, visualize, or communicate them in a way that influenced real decisions.
The Goals
Design an end-to-end platform that could ingest raw qualitative field data, process it through AI, and surface it in intuitive dashboards β tailored for NGOs with limited technical staff and high-stakes reporting needs.

platform
Three pillars, one seamless experience
The design language had to serve three distinct platform capabilities without fragmenting the experience. Each pillar required its own design language while remaining cohesively part of the Rural Senses whole.
01 Β· Data Collection
The data collection process is fundamentally human - local community members gather insights on the ground using paper and pencil. After that they use the now streamlined upload interface where field data enters the system and is handed off to AI for transcription, translation, and analysis.
02 Β· AI-Powered Analysis
A processing layer where voice recordings are transcribed, translated into English, and analyzed through AI models for sentiment, themes, and quantitative insights. The design challenge was making this invisible pipeline feel trustworthy and transparent β stakeholders needed to trust that AI-generated insights were grounded in real community voices.
03 Β· Impact Dashboards & "Ask Ngesa"
The reporting layer β interactive, customizable dashboards for multiple stakeholder types. The chatbot "Ask Ngesa," is an AI assistant embedded in the platform, allowing non-technical users to interrogate large volumes of impact data in plain language. Designing a trustworthy, context-aware AI interface required careful attention to information hierarchy, confidence signaling, and data provenance.

Impact on impact
Beyond the German Design Award recognition, the platform has enabled Rural Senses to expand their client base significantly and deliver measurable improvements in how organizations communicate their work to funders and policymakers.
